Who was Jim Crow?

Who was Jim Crow?

As the 2012 campaign heats up, we’re beginning to see the charge that states who are trying to police their voting procedures are passing “Jim Crow” laws.

Jim Crow Music Score, 1847After the Civil War and Reconstruction, many state and local jurisdictions passed a series of discriminatory laws that covered a wide range of areas. In the Southern states, their aim was to create de jure racial separation between the races. In Northern states, they were more along the lines of de facto separation.

This separation led to separate and unequal accommodations, services, eating facilities and public transportation. The most noticeable acts of discrimination were separate drinking fountains, restrooms and seating arrangement on public transportation and movie theaters.

Of course, the most impactful measure, particularly in the South, was segregated public education. There were separate school facilities all across the United States. Many of the Northern communities claimed that they were only creating “neighborhood” schools but the impact of this type of discrimination effected generations of African-Americans.

So, where did the term come from? Although discriminatory laws began to be enacted at Colored Waiting Room in Durham, North Carolinathe end Reconstruction in 1876, the term “Jim Crow” first appeared in 1904, according to the Dictionary of American English.

However, it probably originated in the 1830s with  ”Jump Jim Crow“, a song-and-dance caricature of blacks performed by white actor Thomas D. Rice in blackface, which first surfaced in 1832 and was used to satirize Andrew Jackson’s populist policies. It came to be used as a pejorative term meaning “Negro”.

As Democrats returned to power in the South following Reconstruction, they began to enact laws that restricted the civil rights of black freedmen. In many cases, they used Separate Drinking Fountainsviolent means to intimidate the freedmen from exercising their right to vote.

By making the voter registration and the electoral laws more restrictive, the white Democrats gradually regained total control of the political process in the South.

Between 1890 and 1910, ten of the eleven former Confederate states, starting with Mississippi, passed new constitutions or amendments that effectively disfranchised most blacks and tens of thousands of poor whites through a combination of poll taxesliteracy and comprehension tests, and residency and record-keeping requirements.Grandfather clauses temporarily permitted some illiterate whites to vote.

Voter turnout dropped drastically through the South as a result of such measures. For example, Alabama had tens of thousands of poor whites disfranchised.

In Louisiana, by 1900, black voters were reduced to 5,320 on the rolls, although they Norman Rockwell desegregation paintingcomprised the majority of the state’s population. By 1910, only 730 blacks were registered, less than 0.5 percent of eligible black men. “In 27 of the state’s 60 parishes, not a single black voter was registered any longer; in 9 more parishes, only one black voter was.”

The cumulative effect in North Carolina meant that black voters were completely eliminated from voter rolls during the period from 1896-1904. The growth of their thriving middle class was slowed. In North Carolina and other Southern states, there were also the effects of invisibility: “[W]ithin a decade of disfranchisement, the white supremacy campaign had erased the image of the black middle class from the minds of white North Carolinians.”

Without the right to vote, African-Americans could not serve on juries or run for local political offices. They effectively disappeared from political life in the South. This affected every facet of their lives.

Without the vote, they could not be represented in the state legislatures. This particularly affected funding for public schools. African-American public schools in the South were severely underfunded, thereby impacting the quality of education in the black community.

What eliminated the Jim Crow laws in the South? The primary weapon was the 1964 Civil Rights Act but before that perhaps, the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education in which state-sponsored school segregation was declared unconstitutional. The tumultuous years of the 1950s and the 1960s put paid to most, if not all, of the “Jim Crow” laws in the United States.

What we have now is not an effort to restrict voting rights but simply an effort to allow voting for registered voters only. The accusation that requiring photo identification cards for voting is a form of Jim Crow is patently false.

Currently, Americans are required to have a photo ID driver’s license, photo ID to cash checks, photo ID to board a plane. It is a fact of modern American life. Unfortunately, our society has become totally security-conscious.

We have by some counts 1-15 million illegal aliens in this country. Would you want them to affect the next election by illegally voting. I certainly don’t.

As always, it is for you the voters to decide.

Who is Saul Alinsky?

Who is Saul Alinsky?

Over the last four years Americans have been introduced to Saul Alinsky and community organizing through the career of Barack Obama. But just who is Saul Alinsky?

Saul AlinskySaul Alinsky is the author of Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals which was originally published in 1971.

Alinsky was born in Chicago in 1909 to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. He worked his way through the University of Chicago as an archaeology major but his career goals were thwarted by the Depression. Two years into graduate school for criminology, he dropped out in 1932 and took a job as a community organizer for the state of Illinois as a criminologist.

At the same time, Alinsky worked part-time as an organizer for the Congress of Industrial Organizations (C.I.O.). By 1939 he had left both positions and became more active as a general community organizer in the Chicago slums. Over the next ten years, he turned hisRules for Radicals organizing skills to cities as diverse as Kansas City and the barrios of Los Angeles.

By 1950, Alinsky began to work in the African-American slums of Chicago. Although he earned the hatred of Mayor Richard J. Daley, the mayor would later say that “Alinsky loves Chicago the same as I do.”

His reputation for organizing became so well-known that when the Oakland (CA) City Council heard that he was traveling there to help organize the black ghettos, they introduced a resolution to ban him from the city.

Alinsky was the author of three books:

In his third and most famous book, Rules for Radicals, Alinsky said in the first chapter’s opening paragraph, Alinsky writes, “What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. Rules for Radicals is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away.”

Alinsky believed in working inside the system and he illustrated his reason in this quote: Barack Obama as a community organizerThere’s another reason for working inside the system. Dostoyevsky said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution. To bring on this reformation requires that the organizer work inside the system, among not only the middle class but the 40 per cent of American families – more than seventy million people – whose income range from $5,000 to $10,000 a year [in 1971]. They cannot be dismissed by labeling them blue collar or hard hat. They will not continue to be relatively passive and slightly challenging. If we fail to communicate with them, if we don’t encourage them to form alliances with us, they will move to the right. Maybe they will anyway, but let’s not let it happen by default.

Alinsky influenced many community organizers, including the current President. Hillary Clinton wrote her senior honors thesis on Saul Alinsky, written at Wellesley College, noting that Alinsky’s personal efforts were a large part of his method.

Alinsky died of a sudden, massive heart attack in 1972, on a street corner in Carmel, California, at the age of 63.

Beating Up The Tea Parties

Beating Up The Tea Parties

If you aren’t a member or you don’t follow the Tea Party Movement, then you don’t realize Culpeper Flagthe incredible attacks that are being carried out every day against the Tea Parties.

I signed up some time ago for a service called Google Alerts. For those who are not familiar with the service, it’s a sort of internet clipping service. Every day I receive the best stories on the internet about a particular subject, in this case American Tea Party Politics.

Each and every day, there is at least one or more stories that either call for the demise of the movement or attempt to demonize the movement and its members.

Today is a good example. There were a total of 10 stories in the alert. Other than legitimate stories relating to the Tea Parties in South Carolina and Wisconsin, we had a story about Nancy Pelosi comparing the Occupy protesters to Tea Partiers, a poll that claims half of the country is against the Tea Party Movement and the endless birther question. Then, of course, there is the obligatory “Would Jesus join the Tea Party?”

After reading these alerts for some time now, I’ve come to several conclusions.Live Free or Die

The Left still doesn’t understand the Tea Party Movement. They look upon it as just another advocacy group, one that simply wants lower taxes and smaller government. They really don’t understand the fears that Tea Party members have about the survivability of their country in the current crisis.

They want to define Tea Party members as old, white, working class “clingers” as their hero, Barack Obama, did in 2008 when he claimed western Pennsylvanians were ‘clinging to their guns and religion’.

The Tea Party people here in the Jefferson Area of Virginia are patriotic Americans who believe in the values that Thomas Jefferson enshrined in our Declaration of Independence. In fact, every Fourth of July at our mid-afternoon rally, we read that document.

It may sound corny but I still get choked up when they come to the part where the Founders pledged “our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor”. The 56 brave men who signed that document risked all for their country.

They sat in a hot, stifling room and contemplated the possible outcomes of their actions: death by hanging for treason against the crown, confiscation of their property, destitution for their families and eternal disgrace. They all signed anyway.

The Left simply doesn’t understand that the Tea Party Movement believes in the undying example of these Patriots and the documents that they bequeathed to us, their descendents if not by blood then by spirit.

The next time that hear the criticism of the Tea Party Movement, remember what it stands for.

The Big Lie is Alive and Well

The Big Lie is Alive and Well

The use of the Big Lie in American politics continues to be used by the liberals and progressives to slur the Tea Party movement.

In a recent speech in New Hampshire, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz revived the Big Debbie Wasserman-SchultzLie that somehow the Tea Party was responsible for the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords a year ago. Wasserman-Schultz, DNC Chair, has used the Big Lie technique for most of her political career.

She persists in this false canard, time and time again, with the press willingly reporting her lies on each and every occasion. She suggested this before it was revealed that the assassin, Jared Loughner, was deranged, “left wing”,”pot head” as described by an acquaintance.

She continues to use this false charge as club to beat up the Tea Party movement and raise money for the Democrat Party. Using this technique ignites the Democrat base, or so the purveyors of the Big Lie think.

Wasserman-Schultz accused the Republicans in December of attempting to rig elections by requiring voters to have a photo ID. She would like us to believe that voters who need an ID for most everything else in America, will be intimidated into not voting if one is required. Give me a break. This is the Big Lie, pure and simple.

Wasserman-Schultz is a long-time user of the Big Lie technique. Here was her take on Rep. Paul Ryan’s attempt to control government spending. “We see a clear attempt for the government to back out of its commitment to seniors.  As a result, many seniors in America will be forced into poverty, and worse.  Some seniors will end up dying because they are forced to put off getting that pain checked out due to huge out-of-pocket costs that will skyrocket for them.  … This plan would literally be a death trap for some seniors.”

Wasserman-Schultz may actually believe in the old stereotype that the Democrats represent the downtrodden and while the Republicans represent the super-rich, despite facts to the contrary. Democrats are beholden to the Hollywood elite, academia, gay activists, feminists, and public employee unions. Says Wasserman Schultz:  “We must expose the stark difference between the Democrats fighting for the middle class and Republicans fighting for the elite and the ultra-wealthy.”

Wasserman Schultz echoes President Obama’s assertion that Democratic election woes are due to not communicating all their accomplishments, not that they’ve pushed unpopular policies.  At her first press conference as DNC chairwoman, she said:  “This past election was tough.  We must do a better job of clearly articulating our accomplishments to the American people.”

Remember these are the folks that brought us massive spending in the name of economic stimulus. They named their healthcare law the Affordable Care Act, despite the clear evidence that it is a massive black hole of government spending. They told us that we needed to pass the bill in order to find out what was in it and when we did they handed out waivers like candy on Halloween.

The next time that you listen to a Democrat (and some Republicans) make sure you filter through what they’re saying and not get taken in by their Big Lies.

The Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in Washington, Part Three

The Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in Washington, Part Three

Here are the final four on the list of the ten most corrupt politicians in Washington.

Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) has been accused of using her staff for personal and political chores. She is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee because of allegation by former staffer Maria Angel Macias. Ms. Macias alleges that she was required by Richardson to order other staffers to run personal errands for the Democrat congresswoman, such as picking up her dry cleaning, and to work on her re-election campaign at taxpayer expense.

The use of Congressional staff for such purposes is a violation of Federal law. Federal employees are protected from such treatment. Macias testified that Richardson instructed her to call staff members after hours to “make them work at campaign events.” Staffers were threatened with dismissal if they did not cooperate. Richardson denied everything and played the race card, saying that she was being targeted because she is black.

The congresswoman is no stranger to controversy. She has already had several House Ethics probes into her conduct.

Rep. David Rivera (R-FL) is apparently mired in numerous ethics controversies stemming from charges of money laundering and tax evasion schemes that took place when Rivera served in the Florida House of Representatives. The Republican congressman, serving his first term, is currently under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Miami-Dade Police public corruption unit, and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) is one of the most senior and one of the most outspoken members of Congress. She has been accused of using her position in the House to secure TARP funds for a bank in which her husband had a financial interest. In August 2010, an investigative subcommittee of the House Ethics Committee charged her with three counts of violating House rules and ethics regulations in connection with her use of power and influence on behalf of OneUnited Bank.

She was expected to face an ethics trial in late 2010, but the committee delayed the trial indefinitely on November 29, 2010, citing newly discovered documentary evidence that may impact proceedings. Despite all of her ethical woes, Maxine Waters seeks to take over the retiring Barney Frank’s position as the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee.

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) may have achieved a new level of corruption in 2011. The House Ethics Committee announced just before Christmas that the Alaska Republican Congressman was cleared of allegations by the House Ethics Committee that he exceeded the limit on campaign donations to his legal defense fund – which was set up to defend Young against an entirely different set of corruption charges!

Since 2007, Young has been under nearly constant investigation for a variety of ethical transgressions that include receiving money to his defense fund from substantially one individual, even though it legally came from twelve different entities. On July 24, 2007, the Wall Street Journal reported that Young was under federal investigation for taking bribes, illegal gratuities, and unreported gifts from VECO Corporation, an Anchorage, Alaska- based company.

In passing, there are several dishonorable mentions that must be awarded.

John Edwards (D-NC) was indicted on June 3, 2011 by a grand jury in North Carolina on six felony charges, attributable – at least initially – to the cover-up of an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, who had been hired as a filmmaker for his campaign.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) blamed redistricting for his decision to leave office, but the congressional ethics investigation of the OneUnited Bank scandal also implicating California Rep. Maxine Waters must have helped make it easier for him to flee the capital. Both Frank and Waters improperly intervened to secure taxpayer TARP bailout money for the corruptly-run Massachusetts bank.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was caught up in the insider trading scandal that exploded into the news in November 2011 courtesy of author Peter Schweizer and his book, Throw Them All Out.

As detailed by Bloomberg, “Pelosi and her husband, Paul, with a net worth estimated at $40 million, bought shares in the initial public offering of credit-card company Visa Inc. in 2008, when Pelosi was speaker of the House… They bought the shares just before legislation died that would have limited the fees credit-card issuers could charge retailers. The shares more than doubled in the next two months.”

The Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in Washington, Part Two

The Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in Washington, Part Two

Barack ObamaIn the previous post we covered the first five of the most corrupt politicians in Washington. We’re now up to number 6 which just happens to be a five-time winner, President Barack Obama.

Barack Obama is a creature of the Chicago and Cook County political machine. “Pay to play” comes naturally for Chicago politicians. Former Governor Rod Blagojevich is going to jail for much the same thing as the Obama administration has done.

In the past year he and his chosen representatives have done a number of questionable actions. Some of them are actually illegal but who’s counting.

The Solyndra loan guarantees was fraught with “pay to play” activity. The loan guarantees were made to a company whose chief investors were Obama campaign bundlers. The government’s agents were Obama bundlers and supporters. The government agent was actually the husband of Solyndra’s lawyer.

The President has chosen to ignore the malfeasance of his own appointees and push his “green energy” initiative. There will be more Solyndras without a doubt and the Congress will publicize them during this election year.

Despite the ban on funding Acorn that Obama signed into law himself, the corrupt I only got to vote onceorganization continues to receive Federal tax dollars under another name, AHCOA (Affordable Housing Centers of America). The Obama administration has funneled $730,000 to the ACORN Network. This organization will be involved in trying to undermine the 2012 election for Obama. Here is the Judicial Watch Report on them.

Barack Obama has chosen to ignore the Constitution of the United States and the rule of law. His continual circumvention of the Senate with the appointment of “czars” who have not been vetted by the Senate is one such example.

According to Politico, he will choose to ignore the 2011 spending bill, which himself signed, Czar Posterthat contains specific language banning their appointment. His claim:  this would undermine “the President’s ability to exercise his constitutional responsibilities and take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” In essence, he is claiming to ignore the Constitution to protect it.

The Obama administration has refused to release White House visitor logs even after an August 2001 ruling by a federal court requiring them to do so. The administration now will have to release all records of all visitors to the White House or explain why White House visits should be kept secret under the law. They continue to fight this ruling by appealing the lower court decision. Barack Obama who promised the most transparent administration is presiding over the most opaque one.

In 2011, the National Labor Relations Board sought to prevent the Boeing Company from opening a $750 million non-union assembly line in North Charleston, South Carolina, to manufacture its Dreamliner plane. Judicial Watch obtained documents from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) showing this lawsuit was politically motivated. Judicial Watch uncovered documents showing NLRB staff cheerleading for Big Labor, mouthingBig Labor Approved Marxist, anti-American slurs and showing contempt for Congress related to the agency’s lawsuit against Boeing, including email correspondence attacking members of Congress. And it starts at the top. Obama bypassed Congress and recess-appointed Craig Becker, who is connected to the AFL-CIO, the SEIU and ACORN, to the NRLB.

Finally, Obama’s corrupt Chicago dealings continued to haunt him in 2011.Obama’s real estate partner, campaign fundraiser and Obama pork recipient Antoin “Tony” Rezko was finally sentenced to jail this year as was former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich for doing many of the same things that Barack Obama is currently doing. The FBI continues to withhold documents of its historic interview of then-Senator Obama about the Illinois corruption scandal. The FBI interview was conducted in December, 2008, about one month before Obama was sworn into the presidency.

The next installment will cover the final four dis-honorees and the dishonorable mentions from 2011.
